Combination Welding Program in Baltimore, Maryland
North American Trade Schools (NATS) trains students in combination welding at its Baltimore, Maryland campus. The program is based on ASME and AWS codes and takes 36 weeks for day classes or 44 weeks for evening classes. It costs $16,325 if completed on time, and graduates can earn AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, and OSHA 10 certifications.
Students train in these welding methods:
- Oxy-fuel cutting
- Shielded metal arc welding (Stick)
- Gas tungsten arc welding (TIG)
- Gas metal arc welding (MIG)
- Flux-cored arc welding
Graduates of the Combination Welding Program leave prepared for entry-level welding jobs. These include pipe welder, fitter, repair welder, fabricated metal products welder, burner, and construction welder. Students can also explore career paths in welding before they graduate.

Upon Completion: Students can take the AWS D1.1 exam, the ASME Section IX Boiler Code exam, and the welding certification tests, plus the OSHA 10 exam. NATS covers the cost of a student’s first attempt at the American Welding Society certification.
Combination Welding Curriculum at NATS
The Combination Welding curriculum starts in the classroom, where students learn welding basics, safety rules, and the properties of common metals before they move to hands-on lab work.
In the lab, students practice Stick, MIG, TIG, and Flux Core welding. They also learn two cutting methods: oxy-fuel cutting and plasma arc cutting.
Students earn D1.1 certification after passing the D1.1 test. After that, they can pursue other certifications, such as the 6G pipe test.
Welding Job Opportunities in Maryland and Beyond
Graduates of the NATS Combination Welding program can pursue several career paths. These include railroad operations, local welding union apprenticeships, ironworker positions, and further training in underwater welding. NATS’s job placement team works with graduates to help them find open positions in the field.
